WHAT’S appening Everything You Wanted to Know About Integration but Were Afraid to Ask The Fourth Industrial Revolution is radically disrupting almost every business sector, expanding what is possible, and with it, transforming consumers’ expectations. Because of this, connectivity — and specifically, integration — is top of mind for everyone in the ecosystem. To better understand integration, we talked to experts from organizations that eat, sleep, and breathe this space. One of these experts is Allegra Margolis, Senior Manager of Product Marketing at MuleSoft. Some of her insights are below. to TrailheaDX in San Francisco. They had come to get a first WHY IS INTEGRATION IMPORTANT FOR CUSTOMERS? Allegra: Customers expect personalized interactions, no matter where they are. Data and processes within the enterprise, however, are highly fragmented. We’re committed to helping customers orchestrate these systems quickly and nimbly, both systems within and beyond the Salesforce ecosystem. WHAT CHALLENGES DO YOU SEE CUSTOMERS FACING WHEN IT COMES TO INTEGRATION? Allegra: Enterprises today have around 900 applications, but only a third of those applications are integrated. This makes it increasingly difficult to have a model of growing revenue and scale. With an increase in IT projects year over year, there needs to be a smarter approach to integration. We want to help customers do more than simply “keep the lights on” and deal with maintenance; we want Trailblazers to spend their time on innovation. HOW DO YOU THINK ABOUT INTEGRATION IN YOUR OVERALL BUSINESS STRATEGY? Allegra: Think about integration as a strategic enabler of the business. To truly build an application network requires coveted Demo Jam trophies. In the end, Jitterbit, Profile & connectivity across data, devices, and applications, including partners. Partners provide greater leverage in helping customers build a connected experience. By demystifying integration, companies can begin to better understand and craft a strategy to tap into the open ecosystem opportunity that lies ahead. WHAWHATT’’SS appappenineningg Our Favorite Trailblazers: Spotlight on Scott Luikart We first met Scott because of his passion for solving business challenges with Salesforce. Since then, he’s become an MVP and a #LifeWithGoldie member. Scott enjoys building so much that he has developed and deployed seven full-lifecycle products within the Salesforce Platform. He teaches Salesforce to LGBT homeless youth in Houston, Texas. There’s so much more to say about Scott’s talent and dedication, which is why he’s this month’s favorite Trailblazer. HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED WITH SALESFORCE? I started back in 2011 as an end user. I then moved to a tech company where I was using Salesforce to look at customer records and store some basic data. We evaluated many solutions and decided to deploy Service Cloud, Live Agent, Knowledge, and others. The agility of the too complex, and too difficult to use. Magentrix opened the door to lower operating platform is what I have come to love most. WHEN DID YOU FIRST USE APPEXCHANGE? WHICH SOLUTION DID YOU INSTALL AND WHY? SCOTT LUIKART We installed a knowledge dashboard and reports application in my first-ever admin role. These Salesforce MVP apps gave me insight into editing unmanaged packages for my needs. Before that, it was frustrating Sr. Salesforce Administrator at Whole Foods Market that I couldn’t manipulate installed packages. It was such a great lesson of the different types of apps and how to evaluate them. HOW HAVE YOU SEEN TECHNOLOGY CREATE CHANGE? In Houston, myself and a few other Salesforce professionals teach Trailhead to LGBT homeless youth each month. These youths might typically walk away when they hit barriers, but when they see success they want that high five. They need to know they matter and people care about them as individuals. YOU RECEIVED THE GOLDEN HOODIE. WHAT'S #LIFEWITHGOLDIE LIKE? It’s an amazing community of people who care about others and really give back to the community. I firmly believe that I have been given so much by this community that I am called to give back. I wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’t for people helping me learn along the way. WHO'S YOUR MENTOR OR IDOL? Dr. Jane Klug, Dean of Students at BHSU, who helped me during my college years. Growing up in South Dakota, coming out was difficult. Jane helped as I dealt with some harassment and also encouraged me to go out and meet people and be the person I am. Had she not pushed me at a critical point in my life, I do not think my resiliency would be the same. I try to embody her giving spirit in all aspects of my life, too. WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHER TRAILBLAZERS? Meet people, get to know others, leverage your community, and give back. I believe you interview for your boss’s job, not your job. If you are fortunate enough to be getting a job in this ecosystem, make sure your boss will defend, empower, and advise you. They will be the biggest advocate. 14 THE EXCHANGE SUMMER 2019

THE GROWTH AND PRESENCE OF TECHNOLOGY IN OUR EVERYDAY LIVES IS AN UNDENIABLE REALITY. Advancements and breakthroughs have cultivated a day-to-day of convenience and ease for many people. Here’s an almost globally relatable example: It’s raining out and you don’t have an umbrella for your walk. Answer? Call a ride with a few simple taps. Technology also increases access to information — if you can get on the internet, you can find out what’s happening at any moment practically anywhere. It can also create a safer environment; Umbrellium, a U.K. team of urban technologists, recently created and launched an interactive pedestrian crossing that responds dynamically in real time to make pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers safer and more aware of each other. From real-time communication at our fingertips to unprecedented advancements in healthcare to empowering millions in their careers, many would agree that technology has changed the world for the better. “ YOUNGER GENERATIONS WANT TO BE IN AN ENVIRONMENT AND BUSINESS THAT’S ABOUT PURPOSE. THEY WANT TO MAKE SURE THE COMPANY THEY’RE IN IS COMMITTED TO IMPROVING THE STATE OF THE WORLD.” - MARC BENIOFF AT THE ANNUAL FORTUNE CEO INITIATIVE MEETING, JUNE 2019 Many tech companies focus tremendous efforts on how their products, workforce, and presence can better the communities around them. Sometimes that can also involve answering tough questions. This age of transparency means businesses and business leaders are rethinking how they operate and thrive in today's world. Brand-new companies that are just getting started and may only have one or two employees, weave values around sustainability, diversity, and philanthropy into the fabric of their business from day one. Twenty years ago, Salesforce transformed corporate philanthropy with the 1-1-1 model of integrated giving. Since then, hundreds of companies of all sizes have adopted aspects of the 1-1-1 model. Pledge 1% is a movement dedicated to making the world a better place by inspiring, fostering, and celebrating early-stage corporate philanthropy by encouraging companies to pledge 1% of equity, product, and employee time for their communities.
