AppExchange & Steve Jobs: WHAT’S What's the connection? appening Salesforce’s 20th anniversary: Speeches, cupcakes, and a Pitbull. Marc Benioff and Parker Harris started Salesforce in 1999. We celebrated this awesome milestone with a blowout concert featuring Grammy-winning rapper Pitbull. There was also lots of VTO, giveaways of designer cupcakes, and more. Here’s to another 20. Then another 20. Well, you get the idea. When you hear “App Store,” you think “Apple,” right? But did you know Marc Benioff was the original owner of the “App Store” trademark? That's because Steve Jobs once advised Marc to start “an app economy.” And Marc did just that. After brainstorming and focus group testing, Jobs’ advice became reality with the launch of AppExchange in 2006. Fast forward to 2008, and Apple launched its own App Store. To return the favor, Marc gave the “App Store” name and the appstore.com URL to Steve Jobs and Apple. “When I joined Salesforce, my title was Director of the App Store,” said Leyla Seka, now EVP of Mobile at Salesforce. With a slight title change, Leyla became the first Director of AppExchange in 2008. “I witnessed the creation of the largest and most vibrant enterprise app ecosystem in the world.” With a little help from Steve Jobs, of course. 8 THE EXCHANGESPRING 2019 THE EXCHANGE 9
